Apropos nothing but a great blog about Japan is Chris Burgess’s A British Prof in Japan. There’s a regular stream of great posts about Japanese culture and history. Recommended for anyone with an interest in Japan.
It was strangely difficult to determine if apps that use Google’s App Passwords are ‘less secure apps’ (access to less secure apps is being turned off next year). The answer appears to be that they are not synonymous.
I really liked this post by Frank Chimero about typeface selection. Great examples for a non-designer about the effects of different choices.
Mobile Safari has an infuriating habit of jumping to the next URL in your Reading List if you swipe too fast (what ‘too fast’ constitutes is a game for the user to play). Does nobody at Apple use this feature?
I’d been thinking for the past couple of months that I’d cracked the puzzle of my ideal computer configuration (iPad Pro, Mac Mini). After visiting the Apple Store, I’m not so sure. The iPad Pro is nice but things like swiping to switch apps still feel super janky.
He is 87 and so maybe I should have calibrated my expectations but the soundtracks for the sequel Star Wars trilogy truly pale in comparison to those for the original. We used to get fresh, memorable motifs. Now we get… was there anything new after Awakens?
The entirety of the article is interesting but I had a Keanu ‘whoa’ moment realising that the Greeks didn’t explore the mathematics of probability. I’d somehow never noticed that.
I thought this article on equality in the New Yorker was particularly great. Reminds me of the most interesting philosophy classes I took at university.
‘Vow’ is still Garbage’s best song.
I’m noticing a disturbing number of men checking their phones while standing at urinals.
I’m really excited that Andrew Sharp and Ben Golliver are podcasting together again. I haven’t been able to get into the NBA this season and, while it’s not just their absence, that hasn’t helped.
This is weird. I can’t get to twitter.com in Safari on my Mac (the website simply loads forever) but I can very quickly and easily get to mobile.twitter.com.
It’s been two years since we last went back to Australia and I really want to visit again but given the weather conditions in Sydney, I’m seriously thinking about cancelling our trip this Christmas. It doesn’t look like the place to bring a 2- and 3-year-old.
It took me an inordinate amount of time—and an altogether too long sojourn into trying to write multi-threaded code before I gave up—but I finally got the answer to Advent of Code’s day 7, part 2.
Spent the entire morning commute clearing the backlog of e-mail for the week. I’d have preferred to continue hacking on my Micro.blog client but it’s good to be back at Inbox Zero.
So yesterday I bought @danielpunkass’s new version of Black Ink and then I downloaded the NYT Crossword app on iOS and then I spent an hour solving some of the recent puzzles and now I think I’m that crossword guy.
Today’s Advent of Code challenge definitely easier than yesterday’s.
Finished putting up the Christmas tree. I’d wanted to go out this afternoon but it’s good to get it done.
